The RD-400 Clamshell Dome is a highly advanced and versatile telescope enclosure engineered for professional astronomical observatories, optical tracking stations, laser communication systems, and other demanding scientific applications.
The system consists of a 4-metre main dome section that can be combined with a wide range of standardized riser walls, adapter rings, control systems, and environmental protection accessories. Its modular construction allows the RD-400 to be configured for ground-level observatories, rooftop installations, support towers, and specialized tracking facilities.
Designed for Professional Instrumentation
With a clear internal diameter of approximately 4 metres, the RD-400 can accommodate a wide range of telescope systems, including Ritchey–Chrétien telescopes with apertures of up to approximately 20 inches, depending on the instrument configuration and mounting arrangement.
The dome’s clamshell design provides an exceptionally wide and unobstructed view of the sky. Unlike conventional rotating slit domes, the RD-400 does not normally require continuous dome-to-telescope synchronization during open-dome operation.
Five-Section Shutter System
The RD-400 features five independently controllable shutter sections operated by a powerful and reliable dual belt-drive system.
Each shutter section can be positioned separately, allowing operators to:
- Create effective wind shielding around sensitive instruments
- Limit exposure to prevailing weather conditions
- Maintain a wide observing field while protecting equipment
- Adapt the opening configuration to the telescope’s operating requirements
Depending on the installed instrumentation and site conditions, the RD-400 can support open-dome operation at wind speeds of approximately 55–60 km/h.

The RD-400’s rugged construction and aerodynamic profile are designed to withstand wind speeds exceeding 200 km/h, subject to the final installation, foundation, site engineering, and configuration.
This makes the dome particularly suitable for demanding locations such as:

The five-section shutter system provides excellent protection for telescopes, optical instruments, communication equipment, and scientific payloads. Maintains suitable operating temperatures around critical gearbox components during deep-temperature operation.
SSRV Active Snow-Removal System
Helps prevent snow and ice accumulation on the shutter system, improving reliability and reducing operational interruptions.

Heavy-Duty Bearing System

A straightforward push-button control system for local operation of the dome shutters.
FULL-Automatic Control System
An advanced ASCOM-compatible automation system designed for remotely operated and robotic observatories. Depending on the selected configuration, features may include:

Custom Colors and Interior Finish
The standard exterior finish is brilliant white, which is recommended for thermal performance and reduced solar heat absorption.
Custom exterior colors are available using specified RAL or PANTONE® colour references. The interior is finished in matte black to minimize internal reflections and reduce stray light around sensitive optical instrumentation.
